Record Rack is doing it’s job! It’s early August and the bucks at Tallaflo have been steadily growing size and mass. We just posted some photos from our game cams, and you’ll see the results of our nutrition program at Tallaflo. For many years, we have worked with Record Rack protein feed to not only build large racks on our bucks, but to also stimulate milk production for the does nursing fawns. The results speak for itself!
We’ve been getting daily rains… so the natural forage for the deer is doing quite well. Walking the farm this past week, we are seeing a health crop of acorns beginning to mature, and our bucks should begin to rub off their velvet next month. The temperatures haven’t been too bad this summer with all of the rain, so the deer herd is not being stressed with extreme heating during the day.
Take a moment to take a look at the game cam pictures from this past week. You will see some beautiful animals… all of which will create some exciting hunts this winter! Don’t wait! We’re getting a lot of emails and calls about hunts for the upcoming season… and want to make sure you have the opportunity to book a hunt that fits your schedule! We will post more pictures at the end of month!
We’re now seeing the fruit of our labors. In our 2017 pictures, we’re beginning to post trail cam shots not only of all the new fawns on the farm, but also some really tremendous racks on our older bucks. We knew from our late winter 2017 photographs, there are still many, many quality bucks in the herd… and pictures are worth a thousand words. If you’re waiting to book your hunt, don’t wait too long… we’re already booking up for the coming season. Call, or email Taylor and reserve your hunt!
The perennial peanuts are blooming… as are the soybeans and much needed rains have arrived. In addition to our foodplots and natural forage, we supplement our deer nutrition with Record Rack feed. Our deer herd consumes about 3,000 pounds a week of this high-protein feed, which greatly enhances antler development, as well as milk development for the nursing does. Record Rack is a Purina product and we work closely with their scientists to continually enhance this product. It’s a great partnership and is yielding record results!
Our annual artificial insemination program technically occurs in November of each year… so May not only brings flowers to Tallaflo, it also brings our newest class of trophy deer. Right on time… the fawns starting dropping in May and we are very pleased with the results. Our typical breeding program yields a buck/doe ratio of 60/40% and this year was no exception. All of the breeding does are caring for their fawns… and the naturally occurring rut, also yields a bumper class of fawns.
Our deer hunting season ends in December… so it’s always interesting to spend some time in the wood after the season to evaluate the herd. Lots of fighting occurs during the rut… and the bucks really need the nutrition to gain back their weight. Same for the does… these little gals get chased heavily during the season… so post rut, our number one goal is to get the herd healthy for the spring. As you’ll see from some of our game cameras in January and February 2017, there were many trophy-class deer which successfully bred this past rut. So, we’re really excited knowing a new class of fawn will be arriving in May!
